Roles & Responsibilities

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) consists of 253 schools and 5 alternate

sites, approximately 65,000 students, and more than 9,000 teachers, support staff, and administration. The

Associate Director of Education (Programs and Operations) is based at the District Headquarters’ Office in

St. John’s and is responsible for educational leadership initiatives, structures, and programs focused on

improving student achievement throughout a geographically dispersed district.

Reporting to the CEO/Director of Education the successful candidate will lead a team of four (4) Regional

Assistant Directors of Education (Programs) in delivering high quality educational programs focused on

learning and educational outcomes, within a safe and caring school framework. This position also provides

leadership to a team a team of professional and support staff responsible for facilities maintenance, capital

construction and custodial services.

You have proven executive level experience to lead an executive team in the implementation and monitoring

of provincial curricular programs; a dynamic range of strategies to ensure student learning outcomes are

being met, including those pertaining to student support services delivery; and, student assessment and

evaluation programs, including provincial assessments. You will assist with the development and

implementation of district policy; lead the school development model throughout the district; and, ensure

appropriate professional learning programs are implemented for staff.

You will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive operational plan which will entail such

components as: care, maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment and grounds and security. You will

also review and recommend capital construction and renovation priorities for the Board.

As a strong leader and communicator, you have demonstrated the ability to foster partnerships with a variety

of stakeholders, engage others to achieve established goals, and have demonstrated the commitment to team

building, staff development, and professional learning communities, all while maintaining high standards of

ethical conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualifications would normally be acquired through an advanced degree in Education, combined with

executive level experience. Knowledge of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 educational system, current best

practices in education delivery, curriculum implementation, student support services, school development,

student assessment and evaluation, and policy development and implementation are required. Experience in

providing leadership for facilities maintenance, capital construction and custodial services will be considered

an asset.

Applicants for this position should have considerable experience in education. A minimum of five years in a

senior leadership position is desirable.
