Roles & Responsibilities

The Marketing and Programs Coordinator is accountable to the Associate Director, Velocity for the enhancement of student engagement and the development of community, alumni, entrepreneurial initiatives on campus within Velocity through the marketing, coordination and delivery of special events and promotional management.

The Marketing and Programs Coordinator maintains the overall community presence of Velocity on campus, with a specific focus on shaping ongoing communications and program delivery. This involves monitoring and measuring the online presence of the Velocity brand, assisting with the overall organization, planning and execution of programs and events for Velocity campus programs.

The Marketing and Programs Coordinator will support the Velocity brand using social media and newsletter channels in a strategic manner, using metrics to verify the success of engagement and social campaigns. In addition, the role involves interacting with students in-person to raise awareness for Velocity campus programming, as well as interviewing campus startups in order to craft compelling stories to share through the Velocity blog. The Marketing and Programs Coordinator will work closest with the Campus Marketing Lead and Campus Programs Lead.



  • Attend, host and evaluate campus events including, but not limited to weekly Velocity Start workshops, Velocity Residence dinners and events, Science Brainstorming workshops, Velocity Fund events
  • Assist with the coordination of Velocity programs including, but not limited to event registration and feedback, maintaining event statistics and records, and other administrative duties
  • Assist with operational processes within the department including, but not limited to Residence statistics, reminder emails, status updates and maintaining databases
  • Assist with Velocity Start room bookings, technical support (audio and visual) and facility related tasks (ongoing and for special events/activities)
  • Prepare all supplies and gifts for events
  • Booking all event spaces, audio equipment and catering
  • Point of contact for all event competitions
  • Schedule and deliver tours to all prospective Velocity Residence students


  • Work with graphic designer to create posters and marketing material for Velocity campus programs
  • Develop and implement distribution plan for event marketing materials throughout University of Waterloo campus (ie. in Student Societies, Departments and buildings on campus)
  • Manage and measure Velocity’s social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube)
  • Manage and maintain the Velocity website content, including but not limited to updating events calendar and Velocity Fund and Quantum Valley InvestmentsĀ® Problem Pitch Competition web pages
  • Compile and distribute weekly newsletters to campus audience
  • Write 1-2 blog posts weekly, with a focus on campus program news
  • Coordinate boothing bookings and act as an in-person ambassador to students on campus on a weekly basis, and at campus fairs including Campus Life Fair, EntSoc Startup Showcase, Housing Fair
  • Assist in the successful execution and marketing of Velocity campus events
  • Manage swag inventory, and research new giveaway items
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Completion of a college diploma or undergraduate degree in Communications, English, Marketing or related discipline required
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered
  • 2 years of experience in a marketing and/or communications role
  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing events preferred
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with the public in a communications capacity
  • Experience writing content for a public audience (e.g. blogging and print publications)
  • Experience in an academic environment working with students considered an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent editing skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines
  • Proficient using social media networks and tools to build a community (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube)
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Mailchimp, HootSuite, Salesforce, Eventbrite and Adobe Suite
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Knowledge of Asana and/or Wufoo is an asset
